Global changes in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

This figure shows the net changes in greenhouse gas emissions for countries that report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) (1)

Note that:

  • Canada had the fourth largest growth in GHG over this period of the countries reporting.
  • The graph does not include China or India. The economies of both of these countries expanded significantly over this period. It is estimated that China's annual emissions surpassed the United States some time in 2006. (2)
  • Many of the countries that showed declines are Eastern European countries whose economies shrank significantly after the collapse of the soviet block.

LULUCF stands for Land-Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry. The UNFCCC defines “sink” as “any process, activity or mechanism which removes a greenhouse gas, an aerosol or a precursor of a greenhouse gas from the atmosphere”. The development of policy on “sinks” has evolved to cover emissions and removals of greenhouse gases resulting from direct human-induced land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) activities and thus, the acronym LULUCF is now used to refer to this sector. This graph does NOT include LULUCF.
