Manitoba GHG emissions from energy
GHG emissions attributed to the energy category are from the burning of fossil fuels.
These emissions come from the following areas:
- transportation - rail, civil aviation, road transport, marine transport, and pipelines
- stationary combustion sources -
electricity generation, in the oil and gas industry, in the manufacturing and construction industry, and for residential and commercial heating
- fugitive sources -
the release of GHGs from the production, processing, transmission, storage, and use of fuels (e.g. flaring). Since 1990, fugitive sources have always accounted for 3% or less of Manitoba's total emissions.
Manitoban's energy consumption contributed about 63% of our GHG emissions in 2005. This is a much lower proportion than the 82% for Canada as a whole. (1) The key reason for this is that Manitoba has a higher proportionate GHG contibution from agriculture than any other province.
