Agriculture


Agriculture plays a unique role in the climate change dilemma. While agriculture contributes a large portion of Manitoba's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, it also has major potential for present and future carbon sequestration.*

 


In this section you’ll find suggestions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from farming practices. These are tried and true practices that often result in higher yields and fewer inputs.

This area includes suggestions on:

*NOTE: Carbon sequestration in agricultural soil was not included in the original Kyoto Protocol. In other words, soils are not officially recognized as carbon sinks, and carbon stored in soil cannot be factored into a country’s emissions budget. (1)
